Converse began existence in 1908 as a rubber shoe company and launched the All Star basketball shoe in 1917. The fate of the company changed with the appointment of basketball player Chuck Taylor as a salesman and company ambassador in 1921, upon which his endorsement was placed on the ankle patch. Converse had monopolized basketball shoes for decades before newer technical sports shoes in the 1970s took prominence. After bankruptcy in 2001, the company was taken over by Nike in 2003. Converse relies increasingly on sentiment and fashion rather than performance now, with the Chuck Taylor All Star and One Star lines being an intrinsic part of everyday fashion that is being accessorized by everybody from teenagers to celebrities.
The Chuck Taylor All Star remains Converse's flagship product, its minimalist design much the same as it has been since the 1920s: canvas upper, rubber toe cap, and signature ankle patch. Available in high-top and low-cut versions, and in countless colors and designs, the shoe has transcended its sporting origins to become an icon of popular culture. Other popular models include the One Star, which was once a 1970s basketball shoe, and the Jack Purcell, with its "smile" on the toe cap. No longer suitable for demanding athletic use, they have found lasting popularity due to their plain, all-purpose styling and modest price.
Converse apparel line maintains the relaxed, youthful appearance of their footwear. The fashion collection highlights basics with retro flair, like tees, hoodies, and sweatpants often coming adorned with the star logo or additional graphics for the company. Ladies' styles move towards mixes of tight and relaxed fits along with retro flourishes. Gents' style follow along similarly with graphic tee-shirts, button-up casuals, and light coats. Whereas their footwear has hardly changed in decades, the clothing lines vary by season and frequently feature collaborations with artists, designers, and other companies to maintain the freshness of the lines.
Converse makes a variety of accessories that go along with their shoes and apparel. Backpacks and duffel bags have clean, utilitarian designs with the same long-lasting materials and retro look as their shoes. The smaller products include caps, beanies, and socks that typically bear the star logo or Chuck Taylor stamp. Women's accessories include crossbody bags and mini backpacks in various colors and prints. The majority of the accessories are functional but with the brand's casual, street-wear aesthetic, so they attract students and young adults looking for affordable, recognizable branding.
