In 1947, George Nelson was asked to design a collection of clocks — and he started by questioning the clock face itself. His insight: people read the position of hands, not numbers. With wristwatches handling the practical work, he reasoned a wall clock's real job had become decorative. That thinking produced 14 numberless timepieces in 1949, wildly different in shape, colour, and material. Vitra began reissuing them in 1999, fitted with modern quartz movements — proof Nelson's original idea still holds up.
