Under the umbrella of Sony's innovative lens technology, the FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for Sony E stands out as a high-quality, advanced, and reliable choice for both professional and amateur photographers. This lens offers a versatile ultra-wide 20mm to mid-telephoto 70mm zoom range, making it an ideal choice for capturing a wide array of subjects in both still and movie formats. The lens's superior G Lens image quality ensures corner-to-corner high resolution across all focal lengths. This is achieved through the lens's state-of-the-art design, which includes two AA (advanced aspherical) elements, one aspherical element, three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, and one ED aspherical element. These components work together to correct both chromatic and spherical aberration, ensuring high optical performance from the ultra-wide 20mm to the 70mm range. The FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for Sony E also boasts peak AF performance, thanks to two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors. These motors facilitate precise, fast, and quiet focus drive, enhancing AF speed by up to 60% and improving performance while tracking by up to two times. This ensures reliable and precise tracking of moving subjects, whether you're shooting continuous stills at up to 30 fps or capturing 4K 120p footage with alpha compatible cameras. The lens's advanced technology also minimizes focus breathing and focus/axial shift while zooming, reducing distracting image shifts for refined movie imagery. The XD Linear Motors and a newly developed aperture unit work together to dramatically reduce noise and vibration when shooting movies, further enhancing the lens's performance. Despite its advanced features, the FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for Sony E maintains a compact, lightweight design. This makes it an excellent choice for photographers seeking superb image quality and versatility in any situation, from ultra-wide to short telephoto shots. The lens's close-up performance is also noteworthy, with a minimum focus distance of 11.8" (30 cm - wide) to 9.8" (25 cm - telephoto) when using AF, and 9.8" (25 cm) throughout the zoom range when focusing manually. The lens also features a constant F4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range, offering greater flexibility in choosing apertures at any focal length. This is complemented by a 9-blade circular aperture and optimally tuned spherical aberration, which enhance the deep, soft bokeh effect achievable with full-frame image sensors. The FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for Sony E also supports Active Mode image stabilization in series cameras, particularly effective at the ultra-wide 20mm end of the zoom range. This feature provides excellent image stabilization performance while maintaining a wide angle of view, making it especially useful for shooting smooth, stable handheld footage while walking. Additional features include a dedicated aperture ring, click/de-click and iris lock switches for direct, rapid control, customizable focus hold buttons, and an instant auto/manual focus selection switch. The lens also boasts a fluorine coating on the front lens element for repelling water, oil, and other contaminants, and a dust and moisture resistant design for reliability in challenging conditions. The lens accepts standard 72mm screw-on filters for expanded creative freedom, and comes with a petal-shaped, bayonet mount lens hood.
