Dark green marbled lacquer punctuated with platinum-plated fittings. These are the style features of the new Writers Edition in honour of the distinguished Irish free thinker George Bernard Shaw. This pen is inspired by Shaw’s best-known character from his play “Pygmalion”: Eliza Doolittle. Just as Eliza, a poor flower girl, is brought up to be an aristocratic lady, so the fine platinum of the pen is replaced more and more towards the cap by the opulent dark green of the precious resin. George Bernard Shaw, the great master of language, was born in Ireland in 1856. Although he left his native land at the age of 20 to become a theatre critic and writer in London, he always retained links with his country. He used his talent not only to create magnificent, subtle dramatic pieces, but always in addition to highlight the problems of the disadvantaged. For this reason, his name is one of few to be associated with brilliant repartee and sharp-tongued criticism of social evils. The quintessence of this unique artist’s attitude to life is his play “Pygmalion”, in which the poor flower girl Eliza Doolittle is transformed into a fine lady by a professor of phonetics. With much subtle humour, Shaw draws attention to the enormous social inequalities in contemporary England. George Bernard Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1925.
