HISTORY ASPECTS - The North American Mustang Mk.IV KH774 served with the Royal Air Force during the final phase of the Second World War in Italy. The North American P-51 Mustang, known in RAF service as the Mustang Mk.IV, was one of the most effective long-range fighter aircraft of the war. Built by North American Aviation, it provided exceptional range, speed, and high-altitude performance, allowing Allied air forces to maintain air superiority deep over enemy territory.Aircraft KH774 was flown by F/L Ellis Blanchford of No. 112 “Shark” Squadron, part of 239 Wing operating in the Mediterranean Theater. From forward bases in Italy, RAF Mustangs carried out fighter sweeps, armed reconnaissance, and ground-attack missions against retreating Axis forces. By Spring 1945, Allied air operations over northern Italy were focused on disrupting German withdrawals, attacking transport networks, and supporting advancing ground troops pushing through the Po Valley. The Mustang Mk.IV played a significant role in the wider air campaign of World War II, particularly in the Mediterranean and European theaters. RAF units such as No. 112 Squadron contributed to achieving complete Allied air dominance, ensuring enemy movement was heavily restricted during the final months of the war. The aircraft’s long-range capability made it ideal for offensive patrols and interdiction missions that helped accelerate the collapse of Axis resistance in Italy. This 1 - 72 scale model is a beautifully detailed tribute to one of the RAF’s most versatile late-war fighter aircraft. Featuring authentic shark-mouth squadron markings and the sleek lines of the Mustang Mk.IV, it captures the aggressive spirit of Mediterranean air operations in 1945. Perfect for collectors of RAF history and WWII fighter aircraft, this replica makes a striking display piece honoring one of the most effective Allied fighters of the war’s final chapter.
