HISTORY ASPECTS - The McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom II “Night Owl,” serial 66-8738, served with the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the United States Air Force during the height of the Vietnam War. Operating under the United States Air Force, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was one of the most versatile and heavily used combat aircraft of its era. The F-4D variant featured improved radar, upgraded s systems, and enhanced air-to-air and air-to-ground capability, making it a formidable multi-role platform in contested airspace. In September 1972, 66-8738 was based at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, a key forward operating location for U.S. air operations in Southeast Asia. From Ubon, the 497th TFS conducted combat missions over North Vietnam and surrounding regions during the ongoing Vietnam War. The squadron’s Phantom II aircraft flew a wide range of missions including MiG combat air patrols, escort duties for strike packages, and precision bombing runs against strategic targets, often facing intense anti-aircraft fire and hostile interceptor threats. The “Night Owl” nickname reflects the aircraft’s association with demanding operational environments, including night missions and high-risk engagements. By 1972, air combat over Vietnam had become highly sophisticated, with radar-guided missiles and advanced tactics shaping aerial encounters. The F-4D remained central to USAF operations, balancing speed, payload, and adaptability in a rapidly evolving combat theater. Aircraft like 66-8738 contributed directly to maintaining air superiority and supporting ground operations during the final years of American combat involvement in Southeast Asia. This 1 - 72 scale model is a striking tribute to one of the most iconic fighters of the Vietnam War era. Featuring authentic squadron markings and detailed Phantom design, it captures the power, speed, and intensity of Cold War air combat.
