HISTORY ASPECTS - Harrier GR.9 ZD406 served with the Royal Navy Strike Wing at RAF Station Cottesmore in 2009, marking the final chapter of the UK's Harrier operations. The GR.9 was an upgraded variant of the famed Harrier II, featuring enhanced avionics, a new s system, and compatibility with precision-guided munitions like Paveway IV bombs and Brimstone missiles. The Royal Navy Strike Wing was formed as part of Joint Force Harrier, combining Royal Air Force and Royal Navy assets to maximize operational flexibility. Stationed at Cottesmore, ZD406 participated in key training exercises and rapid deployment missions, maintaining a high state of readiness for carrier-based operations.During its operational career, Harrier GR.9 ZD406 saw action in Afghanistan as part of Operation Herrick, where Joint Force Harrier provided vital close air support for British and coalition troops. The aircraft’s ability to take off from short or damaged runways made it an invaluable asset in the rugged terrain of Helmand Province. Equipped with advanced targeting pods and smart munitions, ZD406 and other Harriers carried out precision strikes against insurgent positions while also performing reconnaissance and show-of-force missions. These operations significantly enhanced ground forces' effectiveness, demonstrating the enduring versatility of the Harrier platform.By 2009, the Harrier force was approaching its final years, with the UK government planning its retirement in favor of the F-35 Lightning II. However, ZD406 and its squadron remained operationally active, conducting exercises with Royal Navy carriers such as HMS Ark Royal. The aircraft's final deployments reinforced the Harrier's legacy as a pioneering V/STOL that had served the UK for decades. In 2010, the Harrier GR.9 was officially withdrawn from service, closing a significant chapter in British military aviation history. This 1 - 72 scale model meticulously replicates the aircraft's sleek design and operational markings from its service with the Royal Navy Strike Wing. With finely detailed panel lines, authentic loadouts, and an accurate representation of the aircraft’s unique features, this model is a must-have for aviation collectors.
